5 Mistakes to avoid when you get a Cat
Taking someone for granted is very common and even though the most dedicated pet parents say that the pet isn’t counted in that, there are times when their presence is taken for granted too. It is a matter of fact that even the slightest oversight can have great consequences on your little one’s well being.
Here are things every pet parent should make sure they never do to their feline friend.
- Leave them unsupervised when outdoors
Kitties are known for their curious nature and if you think that leaving them unsupervised outdoors won’t make them wander off, you’re surely mistaken. Darting away into the traffic, hiding under the bushes to stay away from street animals is definitely going to happen. Whenever out, it is your duty to pay attention, safely harness or have a leash to keep them around you.
- Leave the windows open
Not that the cat is going to try to fly but curiosity can make it go near the open windows for a peak. It is best to not leave the windows open as losing balance can make it hurt or even kill itself. If you aren’t in a habit of doing so, begin today. Better safe than sorry.
- Delaying vet visits
Vet visits from time to time are crucial. There may be times when the cat seems to be healthy, it eats and sleeps well, doesn’t show any kind of alteration in habits, but there are ailments and health shifts that aren’t visible to us. The cat may experience a poor vision or a kidney dysfunction and one would not even know. So, although the little one seems to be doing okay, it is best to not delay the vet visits and regular checkups.
- Ignoring the teeth
Not particularly fond of anyone touching their white pearlies, cats are reluctant to open wide for people to clean their teeth. This doesn’t mean that you can end up ignoring their dental care routine as a plaque can build up, which can eventually turn to tartar. This tartar can lead to pain and tooth loss. To avoid this all, it is important to brush their teeth daily or a few times a week to keep the gums and teeth healthy. Regular care will also help to reduce your cost of expensive dental treatments.
- Ignore the hair balls
Calling them self-groomers, cats have the tendency to lick and swallow loose fur. Making sure you have a grooming plan and routine in place helps in lending them a hand and reduce the amount of hair that the cat ingests from time to time. Swallowing and frequent hairballs can lead to gastrointestinal diseases. A clean up session should always be a part of the monthly activities. In case of doubts about the ways to groom the little one and how often, the vet will always be happy to help.
Pet parents often tend to miss out on the above mentioned points which may lead to a negative change in the health and functioning of the pet. By keeping these in mind and avoiding these very common mistakes, the cat is sure to be immune to certain ailments and the chances of fatal incidents.
Having a pet at home is always like a new born child and it needs to be paid enough attention so as to make sure accidents don’t occur. Don’t take their presence for granted.
We wish you a safe and happy parenting!
