How to Fly with your Pet?

by Akshay Mirchandani

There is absolutely no pawparent who is okay with leaving their furry ones behind. It has always been a painful farewell but if you’re lucky, you’ll get to take your pal along for a vacation! It is easier than ever to book a place for your pets and within certain guidelines, they will also be allowed to travel with you in the cabin.

Irrespective about the nature of your little one, there may be some things about flying that can make them uncomfortable. Here are some tips to help you travel with your pet in an airplane.

1-Pack the Must-Haves for flying

While boarding the plane, there are a list of things that need to be kept handy.

A] Their bowl to drink water or any other liquid

B] Treats and toys to keep them busy

C] A leash for them to not be able walk about on airports

D] Puppy pads for the times they need to excrete

E] Vet prescribed anti-nausea and anti-anxiety medications

2- Get them tired before the flight

Make sure you get your pup for a walk before boarding the flight as it will get it tired enough to take an in-flight nap. Spending some of the time sleeping during flight hours will make them less uncomfortable and cranky.

3-Feed them with ice chips

Keeping the pet hydrated is a must but it can be messy while you’re on the plane. Give them ice chips through crate slots. Not only does this help in preventing them from falling sick of dehydration but also is fun as the crunching feels like a treat which helps them feel less stressed out.

4-Don’t forget to bring the wraps

Many airplanes have floor air-conditioners which may end up making the pet feel cold. Make sure that you pack blankets or your t-shirts to keep them warm. The familiar scent would also make them feel better and more like home.

5-Use sedatives as the last resort

Although sedatives are prescribed by the vet, it is important to not give them to the pet until it gets anxious and sick. These medications are strong and have negative effects like unsteadiness and breathing problems. So it is important to avoid them as much as they can.

Last but not the least, have a fun-filled, amazing vacation with your little one and make the best of memories to cherish!
